From gadget to bedside, and beyond.

Dr. Gal Goshen, Clinical AI: strategy, implementation, governance and AI literacy

I am Dr. Gal Goshen, The Gadget'ologist: a physician-scientist-entrepreneur turned healthcare-AI leader. I am Chief AI Officer of the Dina Recanati School of Medicine at Reichman University, Israel. Before that I was Chief AI Officer at ARC Innovation, Sheba Medical Center, where I founded and headed the Sheba AI Academy. I connect technology and healthcare so that technology reaches people and improves their lives.

Nearly thirty years of building medical technology

My PhD work began in 1997 at the Hebrew University, on image analysis and decision-support algorithms for pathology, back when nobody put "AI" on a slide. We called it decision support and hoped the pathologist would forgive the interface. The vocabulary has been upgraded since; the test has not: does it help the person who has to make the call?

My medical career began in uniform, as an IDF Medical Officer. After my discharge I moved into industry. At Medial EarlySign I led product, and we rolled out Israel's first clinical AI workflow at scale (ColonFlag, at Maccabi). I was Medical Director at Lifewatch and Chief Medical Officer at Medasense. I co-founded ARDIA, a digital-pathology company. Separately, I co-founded PatenSee and was its CEO; the company developed dialysis vascular-access monitoring and received FDA Breakthrough Device Designation.

Teaching people to use it

Technology nobody knows how to use sits in a drawer. At Sheba I was handed the task of building an “AI-based hospital”, after first explaining what that actually means. Along the way I founded Sheba’s AI Academy, which trains healthcare professionals to work with AI. At Reichman I lead the integration of AI into the training of future physicians. I also served on a Tel Aviv University advisory committee on preparing future doctors for an AI world.

Trust, and AI governance in health organizations

I am a member of the AI governance working group of the Israeli Ministry of Health's AI Implementers Forum, and one of the authors of "Principles for Advancing AI Governance in Health Organizations" (2026). With Izhar Laufer, I co-head the AI governance team of the 24th Dead Sea Conference.

Volunteering and talks for the public

A good part of my time goes to volunteering, because impact does not end with office hours. I mentored in the Ministry of Education's national program training teachers in AI, I lecture in its "Science in the Classroom" program, and I advise on bringing AI into high-school biotechnology tracks. Beyond that I speak to anyone who is curious, from clinicians and students to teachers, companies and the general public.

Why "Gadget'ologist"?

A new device still excites me, and I have mostly learned to read the manual first. And most of my work is translation: between what a technology can do and what a person needs, in a clinic or at home.
